The CELTA is an introductory course for candidates who have little or no previous English language teaching experience. It may also be suitable for candidates with some experience but little previous training. It is highly practical and lays a firm foundation upon which a teacher can build with experience. Seminars and demonstrations focus on a wide range of issues including classroom management, language awareness and practical teaching techniques.
Teaching practice is a major focus of the Certificate and is conducted with real students at different levels. The group size is small (a maximum of 6 trainees/tutor) so candidates receive intensive face to face instruction from trainers in preparation for teaching practice and feedback after the practice is completed.
The CELTA deals extensively with analysis of English from a learner's perspective and includes a range of practically focused written assignments including a student case study and language analysis tasks.
Trainees are always kept informed of their progress during the course. The grades A, B, and Pass are awarded to successful candidates as a result of continuous assessment. Trainees at Kaplan International College Cairns and Brisbane value the familiar but hardworking atmosphere and the range of facilities on offer, including free wireless internet access.

The full-time CELTA course is really intensive and certainly a very steep learning curve if you haven't previously taught. I found the course incredibly useful as I had no previous experience and the program was very practical with its combination of training sessions, regular tutor feedback and real teaching practice right from the start. After completing the course I felt confident that I would be able to teach independently.
Finding work after completing the CELTA course was really easy. I was fortunate enough to get a job in Cairns and started working full time two weeks after finishing the course. I had originally enrolled in the course with the intention of moving to Italy to work as soon as I graduated as I hadn't previously realised how many opportunities there are in Australia! Once you start looking, there are a vast range of job opportunities throughout the world for English teachers and the CELTA is by far the most requested initial qualification for teachers.
If you're thinking of making a career change, like I did, or you're just starting out the CELTA is a fantastic choice!
