IH Brisbane
English Language Programs
General English
- Courses are offered at Beginner to Advanced levels
- There are Part Time, Full Time and Super Intensive Programs for all levels
- Part Time courses run for 15 hours per week; Full Time courses run for 20 hours per week and Super Intensive courses run for 25 hours per week
- General English courses start every Monday
- All courses are delivered in a face to face format and there is no self study component
- All students starting General English do an IH placement test on the first day of their course to ascertain which class the student should join
- Every student receives a text book for the level they are studying at (longer term students may receive more than one text book)
- Maximum class size is 15 students
- Part Time classes do all General English lessons while Full Time and Super Intensive classes do General English, Skills Classes and Options Classes as part of their program
- Students have weekly assessment tests to map their progress. Results of these progress tests will determine if students move to the next level of study
- Students also have weekly feedback sessions with their teachers. The feedback sessions are on an individual basis and provide the student and teacher with the opportunity to discuss their progress, special needs and interests and future study plans in a one-on-one basis
Cambridge Exam Preparation*
- Expert exam preparation classes are offered for First Certificate, Advanced Certificate and Proficiency Certificate exams
- Class sizes are kept small – maximum of 12 students per class
- The course is run on a full time basis with 25 face to face contact hours per week
- Entry into Cambridge Exam Preparation courses is subject to a pre-test
- Classes include mock exams to ensure maximum practice for the exams
- Students receive an IH Certificate as well as the internationally recognised certificate from Cambridge
- Courses are 10 or 12 weeks in length and start in January, March, June (non- exam course) and September each year
- Students receive two text books for each exam course
- Students may choose to sit more than one exam or may choose not to sit the exam at the end of the course
- IH books the exams for the students wishing to do them
IELTS Exam Preparation*
- Specialist preparation courses for students wanting to undertake the IELTS exam for entry to University, applying for employment or planning to migrate to Australia
- The course is full time and runs for 25 hours face to face each week.
- Courses are 5, 10, 15 or 20 weeks in length and start on set start dates throughout the year
- Intensive focus on the four skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing to prepare for the exam as well as teaching students exam techniques to help ensure success in the exam
- IH completes the exam booking process free of charge – students must pay the exam fee to IELTS Australia
- Maximum class size is 15 students
- Entry into the course is via pre-test or interview with the Director of Studies
- The course includes practice exams
- Students receive an IELTS text book for their course
- IH can book students into IELTS tests anywhere in Australia – students must pay their exam fee but the application processing service is free of charge
English for Academic Purposes*
- This course is designed to provide students with the skills needed to undertake an academic program at tertiary level in English
- The course is full time and runs for 25 hours face to face each week
- Courses are 5, 10, 15 or 20 weeks in length and start on set start dates throughout the year
- There is an intensive focus on academic listening, speaking, reading and writing to prepare students for all courses of study
- The course covers note taking, effective summarising of notes, research and study skills and assignment writing and students get full academic counselling through visits to universities and colleges as well as information and counselling sessions provided at IH by these institutions
- IH has direct entry agreements with schools, colleges and universities in Australia and graduates from the EAP program are deemed to have met the English language entry requirements of those institutions with which IH has direct entry agreements
GENERAL English* and further study
(Direct Entry English Programs)
- These programs allow students to enrol in package programs combining English study at IH and other programs at school, TAFE, College or University level
- IH has direct entry agreements or pathway agreements with a wide range of institutions offering many different programs including Business, IT, Graphic Design, Travel and Tourism, Hospitality, Film & TV, Child Care, Marketing, Fitness, Beauty Therapy, Hairdressing, Natural Medicine plus more
- Students on pathway programs are monitored to ensure they reach their further study goal
- IH can assist with application processes for the student’s choice of further study
- IH staff liaise with partner institutions to keep them advised of the student’s progress
- Entry to further study programs is available from General English, Cambridge Exam Preparation courses, IELTS Preparation Courses, or English for Academic Purposes courses.
- Special new programs in English + Airline Cabin Crew Studies and English and Aircraft Maintenance
GENERAL English* and Internships
- Students on this program combine English language studies and an internship placement with an Australian company
- Students have to reach the required level of English before starting their internship placement
- Any of the IH English courses can be undertaken in preparation for the Internship
- IH works with a specialist internship company in Australia to provide the internship placements
- Students can choose to study their English language with either IH Brisbane or IH Cairns and then proceed to their internship placement anywhere in Australia.
- The internship placement will provide students with a structured and monitored training program within a company
- Internships can be paid placements or unpaid placements
- Paid placements are only available in the hospitality and tourism industry sector while unpaid internships are available in just many areas including Accounting, Aged Care, Agriculture, Banking, Education, Engineering, Forestry, Government, Health, IT, Law, Sales and Marketing, Media, Marine Science, Retail, Sport, Telecommunications plus more
- Students planning on doing an internship placement in Australia will need to have an advanced level of English proficiency (IELTS 6 equivalent) and need to apply for the internship placement at least 3 months in advance
- Students applying for internship placements must be studying or working in a related field
International Business Communication and TOEIC*
- Designed for students who intend to improve their business communication skills. The course provides lessons which focus on useful language in realistic situations and will help build confidence in using English in areas such as telephoning, meetings, making arrangements, negotiating and networking.
- For students, this course may be helpful in securing employment in their home countries and enhancing ability to use English in everyday work situations
- Course runs for 5 weeks and students study for 5 hours per day
- There is a combination of classroom based study, research for projects and presentations as well as guest lecturers from the business professionals in various industry sectors.
- Students may choose to do a TOEIC Exam during their course and can book and sit this at IH Brisbane
Intuition Homestudy Programs
- Students live and study in their teacher’s home with a personalised program to suit the student’s specific needs and interests
- In addition to lessons, students participate in the day to day activities of their teacher and their family
- One-to-one and two-to-one courses are available
- Students can choose to study 15, 20, 25 or 30 hours per week and courses can be 1-4 weeks in length
- Students must be 15 years or older to enrol –there is no maximum age limit
- Programs are available in General English, Business English or a combination of both (Combination Program)
- The course is offered at IH Cairns, IH Brisbane or IH Sydney
- Tuition, text book and Homestay with all meals are included in the program price
- Airport transfers are available on request and fees apply for this service in Brisbane and Sydney
Christmas Course
- A special study tour organised to run over the Christmas and New Year period each year
- Allows students to experience a true Australian Christmas with an Australian family
- The course combines English lessons, activities and tours and time with the family through the Christmas holidays
- The package includes homestay accommodation with half board
- Airport transfer service is available on request – please note charges apply for this service in Brisbane
Private Tuition
- A range of one-to-one or two-to-one lessons can be arranged to suit the students’ needs or schedule
- Course content and hours of study are all designed to meet student requests with days and times of lessons being selected by the student
- Special interest lessons for Executives, Parents and Children and Senior Travellers are also available
- Lessons are charged on a per hour basis and students must purchase their own text books
Young Learners’ Program
- This program is specifically designed for young learners aged between 8 – 15 years
- This course is run for individuals and groups throughout July and August holiday periods and is offered at other times in the year for groups of 6 students or more
- Specifically tailored English lessons are offered together with activities and tours suited to this age group
- Tuition, materials, tours and activities and homestay are included in the program
- The program also includes all meals plus daily transport to and from the school
- Programs are usually one or two weeks in length but three and four week programs are available on request

GENERAL English* and Conservation Volunteer Program
- Students combine English language study with a unique program of volunteer work on conservation projects around Australia
- The program enables students to experience the unique heritage and wildlife of Australia, often visiting places that the everyday Australian or tourist would not see
- English courses can be done at either of the IH Queensland schools (Brisbane or Cairns) and the conservation project can be done anywhere in Australia
- Projects include such things as tagging wildlife, tree planting, building paths and walkways in national parks, historic building restoration etc.
- Participants for the program can be aged between 18 and 80
- People from Australia and all around the world undertake the conservation programs so it is a great way to meet other people
- Participants must reach an intermediate level of English before commencing their conservation program
- English courses are available at all levels and for any course length – please see our General English section and our Course Fees and Start Dates section for more information on the English courses and accommodation during the English course
- The Conservation Program is offered for 2, 4 or 6 weeks and the price for this program includes all meals, camping/bunkhouse/dorm accommodation and project training during the conservation program
- Students must book 3 months in advance for this program
- Travel from IH to selected destination for the conservation program is not included in the program price
Group Study Tours
- Study tours are organised programs for groups to study English language and participate in tours and activities suited to their specific interests or needs.
- Study tours can be arranged for groups of any size and for any age group.
- Special interest groups are an IH specialty – these programs include:
- English and Sports with professional coaching in Tennis, Swimming, Surfing, Rugby, Soccer and Basketball
- English and Beauty Therapy, Hairdressing and Modelling
- English and Business Study Tours – Banking and Finance, Marketing and International Business, English for Lawyers

Study Hop Program
- Experience more than one city during your study and combine courses through the IH Australia network.
- Study with IH Brisbane, IH Cairns and IH Sydney
- Choose two city or three city study hop program – students study in multiple IH schools and just pay one enrolment fee and one accommodation placement fee
- No minimum length of study in each school
- Book all study through IH Brisbane
- Study with IH Brisbane and IH Cairns with Free Airfare between Brisbane and Cairns
- Students must study a total of 20 weeks with IH Queensland with a minimum of 5 weeks in the first or last school
- Pay just one enrolment fee and one accommodation fee
- Economy class (one way) airticket is booked and provided by IH Queensland for students doing this
- Program has to be booked in advance and no changes to the study program are allowed
- Coordinated study program between the two schools so students can progress through levels seamlessly
Teacher Training Courses
IH is world famous for teacher training programs. People wishing to gain skills and qualifications for a career in teaching English can choose from any of the following courses:
- CELTA
- Certificate IV in TESOL
- English for Teaching Children
- Non-Native Teacher Training Programs
Certificate IV in TESOL
- This is a five week full time program designed to provide participants with the skills to teach English to non-native speaking students
- Graduates receive a full nationally recognised certificate under the Australian Qualifications Framework
- The Certificate IV in TESOL is recognised as one of the accepted minimum qualifications for English language teaching
- The course is very intensive requiring students to attend classes full time from 8.30 to 3.30 then do assignment work and additional workshops in the school and at home or libraries.
- Students on the program are also required to deliver practical teaching classes for review by the trainer and the teacher training peers.
- Students pay a small materials fee of $70 to cover handouts and work sheets during the course and will also be required to purchase two key teaching text books (approximate cost is $100 AUD)
English for Teaching Children
- The course is designed to instruct participants in teaching English to young learners and managing the young learner classroom
- The course includes the development and evaluation of resources for young learners, teaching speaking, reading and writing in fun and exciting ways for children, using games and activities in the classroom and a visit to pre-schools, childcare centres or children activities to observe young learners
- Participants are required to deliver sample lessons for review by their trainer and their peers as well as observing classes in action. There are assignments and classroom assessments throughout the program
- Students have to have an intermediate level of English for entry into the program

Non-Native Teacher Training Programs
- Specially designed and developed programs for groups from non-native speaker backgrounds are arranged by IH
- Courses are available in classroom mode, on-line mode or through a combination of both
- Programs run throughout the year and can be of any length requested
- IH can conduct a complete needs analysis for groups prior to course commencement
- Programs can be delivered in Australia or in participants home country

Business Courses
International Business (Certificates II and III)
- Business @ IH is a new set of programs commencing in October 2006
- First programs on offer will be International Business (Certificates II and III)
- Students must have an IELTS level of 5.5 or equivalent for entry and must have completed to Australian Year 10 equivalent at school
- Direct entry is available from IH English (Upper Intermediate or Advanced levels) into the International Business courses
- International Business English is included in the program
- Students will study for 5 hours per day including lectures, assignment research and preparation and International Business English
- Certificate II course is 10 weeks long and Certificate III course is 15 weeks long (programs do articulate together)
- Recognition of prior learning is available meaning students can fast track their program if they have studied in a similar area before
